Note: Difference between POP3 and IMAP

Kindly click POP3 vs. IMAP to redirect you to the discussion between POP3 and IMAP configuration before proceeding to create/add a new account.

POP3 vs. IMAP

  1. Open Outlook 2016.
  2. Go to File -> Info -> Add Account.
  3. Input your email address and click the "Advanced option" and check "Let me set up my account manually".
  4. Choose your desired configuration if it's POP3 or IMAP by clicking it.
  5. Enter the required information:
    • Incoming mail server - This will be mail.yourdomain.com, where yourdomain.com is the domain of your email account.
    • Incoming server (POP3)- 110
    • Incoming server (IMAP)- 143
    • Do not check "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL/TLS)"
    • Outgoing mail server (SMTP) - This will also be mail.yourdomain.com, where yourdomain.com is the domain of your email account.
    • Outgoing server (SMTP)- 587
    • The encryption method must be set to "None" 
  6. Check the "connect" button.
  7. The credential box will pop up and input your password and check the checkbox "Save this password in your password list" and click "Ok".
  8. Your email account is now set up, but you need to add an additional setting to make sure all emails are delivered to the correct folders.
  9. Go to File -> Account settings -> Account settings.
  10. Select the account you just set up and click Change in the menu right above it.
  11. Click More Settings... in the bottom right.
  12. Click the Advanced tab ->Type in INBOX as the Root folder path, all in capitals.
  13. Click OK to save your settings.
  14. Click Next to continue.
    * Outlook will now test your account settings by trying to send a test message. Click Close when the tests are completed.
  15. Click Finish to go to your inbox. You can now see that all folders are on the same level as your inbox.
